Jan 6th

The beginning of the year is, of course, a good time for decluttering, and what could be better than pulling some puzzles and books off your shelves, bringing them to us, and picking up something great.

Feel free to drop books and puzzles off during the days before the 6th, and the event itself will be pretty straightforward.

We’ll set out all the books and puzzles, have something for you to sip on, and donate whatever is left to the Friends of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library. Mark your calendars and join us!

Silent Book Club

What’s a Silent Book Club, you ask? Well, it’s all in the name. It’s simply a time for you to leave the chaos of the outside world and retreat into a book of your own choosing. Bring whatever is next on your stack or pull something down off the shelves. Grab a drink and a comfy seat, put your phone into Airplane mode (or, better yet, let us hold onto it behind the counter), and give yourself the gift of an hour. The to-do list(s) will be there when the hour is over. We promise.

Read Between the Wines

5:30 - 7

Join us for our latest installation of Read Between the Wines, our partnership with Samantha Jones and the Monticello Wine Trail. We'll gather to discuss Rufi Thorpe's Margo's Got Money Troubles over a wonderful sparkling Pet Nat from Loving Cup Winery in North Garden.

The Machine (with Larry Garretson and Philip)

5:30 Start

This Book Club is the continuation of an ongoing conversation around the shop about Technology and its role in shaping contemporary life. After its publication, we’ve sold a lot of copies of Paul Kingsnorth’s Against the Machine, and we thought: why not set aside a few nights to gather a group to discuss the topics it addresses?

As such, we’ll start with Kingsnorth’s new book (over two months) and conclude with a piece of mid-century Technology criticism (probably from Jacques Ellul). But if you are at all interested in the fundamental nature of our technological age and want to discuss Kingsnorth with others, register below and join us on Tuesday, February 10th.

Spirit of the Lives Book Club

Join us for some great reads on the classic writings of three great spiritual trachers.

Jesus and The Disinherited. First published in 1949, Jesus and the Disinherited in Thurman’s great message of renewal for anyone struggling with poverty, racism, and spiritual disengagement. His teachings reach past anger and distrust toward a vision of unity.

The Interior Castle(this can be a tough read) Teresa was a 16th Century Spanish mystic, nun and religious reformer. The Interior Castle, written in 1577 and published in 1588, was inspired by a vision of the journey of the soul through various stages toward unity.

New Seeds of Contemplation. Often recommended as the best “first book” to read of Merton’s, “New Seeds” is a collection of meditative pieces that reflect on what it means to be a spiritual seeker today. This is a book filled with Merton’s spiritual wisdom and offers a variety of meditations on the true heart of contemplative living.
